Winging It

TopSea Wingz in Hampstead delights the wings lovers of Topsail.

The next time you sink your teeth into a juicy, flavorful wing at TopSea Wingz, be sure to thank the owners’ oldest son. The then 12-year-old was excited the family was moving to the Topsail area from Atlanta but disappointed he couldn’t find his beloved lemon pepper wings like back home.

His parents, Lonnie and Autumn Mathis, set out to make things right for their son and other local wing fans when they opened TopSea Wingz in the summer of 2021.

Now whenever locals and visitors get a hankering for pass-more-napkins-tasty wings and delicious sauces in multiple flavors, they know where to go. Besides the Lemon Pepper wings, patrons can enjoy Sweet Chili, Jamaican Jerk, Old Bay, Mango Habanero (with a kick!) and other flavors.

The most popular wing is the Garlic Parmesan, Lonnie says. He calls it the in-house special. The menu also features boneless wings, chicken tenders, sides, combos, desserts and yummy burgers. Oh, and don’t forget the cheese curds!

Lonnie describes himself as a family guy and wants TopSea Wingz to be a welcoming place serving up excellent dishes with a heavy dose of Southern hospitality. A former police officer in Atlanta, he is a deputy with the Pender County Sheriff’s department, and Autumn works at a nearby hospital. The couple moved to the area to be closer to the beach and for the great family-friendly atmosphere to raise their three kids.

In addition to top-notch food, TopSea Wingz has everything you need to watch the big game, including large televisions and the NFL Sunday Ticket. There is even a television tuned to kids’ programs so the whole crew can be happy.

“We want customers to feel comfortable and at home with good service and a family environment,” Lonnie says.

A city girl with a beach problem, I was born and raised in Charlotte, NC, and it’s where I continue to launch my adventures. My passion for travel has taken me to international wine tastings, tubing in mountain rivers and frisbee golf at local parks. It’s a thirst matched only by my love of writing, with bylines in The Charlotte Observer, Ballantyne Magazine, Charlotte Parent, Retirement Lifestyles, SouthPark Magazine, My School Rocks and beyond, not to mention the occasional stab at creative fiction and journaling. In recent years, I’ve stretched my freelance footprint into the corporate space, helping business clients ranging from real estate to health care to professional matchmakers connect with their communities succinctly and effectively. I’ll happily travel for a good story, but am just as comfortable working from my kitchen island alongside my teenage daughter and nine-year-old mutt, who never leave me at a loss for words.
