Topsail High’s Marching Pirates were invited to perform in the 2028 London New Year’s Day Parade, representing Topsail and Pender County Schools.

The Topsail High School Marching Pirates are preparing for an unforgettable international opportunity after receiving an invitation to perform in the 42nd Annual London New Year’s Day Parade on January 1, 2028. The appearance will place Topsail’s student musicians in one of the world’s most recognized New Year’s Day celebrations and give them the chance to represent the Topsail community on a global stage.

The invitation marked a milestone moment not only for Topsail High School, but also for Pender County Schools, as the Marching Pirates were selected to participate in a parade that draws performers from around the world. Under the direction of Jake Wentzek, Director of Bands at Topsail High School, the program has built a reputation for strong musicianship, discipline, and school pride—qualities that helped earn the band’s place in the 2028 event.

About the London New Year’s Day Parade

Now known as The London Parade, the event began in 1987 as the Lord Mayor of Westminster’s Big Parade and has grown into a major international tradition. The parade travels through central London and typically features thousands of participants, including marching bands, dancers, cultural groups, floats, and entertainers. For many student performers, it is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to share their talent with a massive live audience and viewers around the world.

A Major Achievement for Topsail High School and Pender County Schools

Dr. Michael Sasscer, principal of Topsail High School, recognized the invitation as a testament to the students’ commitment and the strength of the band program. The selection also highlighted the support system behind the Marching Pirates, including families, school leadership, and community partners.

Wentzek also credited the encouragement of district leadership and the ongoing work of the Topsail Music Boosters, a key organization supporting the band’s growth and opportunities. The Boosters have provided continued financial support as planning begins, helping the Marching Pirates move closer to making the trip to London a reality.

Why This Trip Matters

Beyond the performance itself, the London invitation underscored the impact of music education and the arts in public schools. Experiences like international travel and performance can broaden students’ perspectives, build confidence, and create lasting memories that extend far beyond the marching field.

Dr. Brad Breedlove, superintendent of Pender County Schools, noted that the Marching Pirates will represent more than their school when they step onto the London parade route—they will represent Pender County Schools and North Carolina.

As preparations continue, the Topsail High School Marching Pirates are setting their sights on January 1, 2028, ready to bring their talent, dedication, and Pirate pride to London.
