Todd Hewitt, a STEM and robotics teacher at Topsail Middle School, has been named the 2026 Corning STEM Educator of the Year for the Middle School Division, earning regional recognition for his innovative, hands-on approach to science and technology learning.
Presented by Corning’s Wilmington team, the annual award honors Cape Fear-area educators who make a lasting impact through excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Corning has recognized outstanding local STEM teachers since 2013.
Recognizing innovative STEM learning in southeastern North Carolina
Hewitt was selected through a competitive application process that included educators from across southeastern North Carolina. The honor highlights his dedication to student success and his commitment to creating meaningful STEM experiences that keep students engaged and curious.
In Hewitt’s classroom at Topsail Middle, students explore engineering, robotics, coding, and design through project-based learning. His lessons encourage students to think critically, collaborate with classmates, and solve real-world problems, while building both technical skills and the employability skills they’ll use well beyond middle school.
Pender County Schools celebrates a standout educator

Honored at UNCW and celebrated by Corning
Hewitt was recognized at UNCW’s Soar into STEM Conference on June 11, and was celebrated again during a Corning-hosted event on Monday, July 20.
His award reflects Pender County Schools’ commitment to innovative learning opportunities that prepare students for college, careers, and life.
