Wilmington Road Runners award scholarships to local high school athletes.
Wilmington Road Runners Club (WRRC) awarded $6,000 in scholarships this year to seniors in the Cape Fear region who run on their high school’s cross country or track team.
The scholarship award winners are chosen because they have positively impacted their team, inspired teammates, been active in the community and showed commitment to serving others.
“The WRRC scholarships recognize student runners who are leaders — and some who are unsung heroes — on their track and cross-country teams,” says WRRC Scholarship Committee Chairman Rob Ward. “We applaud the passion for running and commitment to the community that these young athletes have.”
Since 2015 the Wilmington Roadrunners Club Scholarship Program has awarded $21,000 in scholarships to high school seniors from New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties.
“WRRC makes it a priority to raise money to support young runners in our area as a way of giving back to the community,” WRRC President David Southerland says. “We continue to see the benefits Wilmington-area runners are able to achieve when we come together to encourage one another’s growth.”
This year’s first-place winners of $1,500 scholarships went to:
Nicole Coursey of Topsail High School
Kieran Barclay of Cape Fear Academy
Runner-up awards of $750 each went to:
Chelsea Echols of North Brunswick High School
Audrey Monahan of E. A. Laney High School
Tanner MacPherson of Cape Fear Academy
Michael Cooke of Coastal Christian High School
