A recent college graduate brings a healthy smoothie café to Hampstead.
Some people spend a good part of their life searching for what they want to do. Not Mallory Wilson.
At age 22 she has her dream job as owner of Surfs Up Nutrition, a smoothie and energy café.
“When I was going to school at ECU (East Carolina University), I started frequently visiting a smoothie bar similar to Surfs Up Nutrition,” Wilson says. “After working and being involved in a smoothie bar like this, I knew that’s what I needed to bring to the Surf City/Hampstead community.”
Wilson grew up in Durham and spent a lot of time in Topsail Island, where her grandparents had a beach place. She knew from a young age she eventually wanted to make the area her permanent home. In 2020 Wilson and her boyfriend, Austin Adcock, pulled double duty going to college remotely due to COVID while searching for the perfect spot for a smoothie bar. The hard work paid off, and in March 2021 Surfs Up Nutrition opened its doors. They both graduated a few months later in May.
“It’s exciting to know that we now own a business and have a college degree at the age of 22,” she says.
Wilson says Surfs Up Nutrition is for anyone looking for a healthy alternative to fast food. “We strive to have the best shakes and energy drinks made in a timely manner that will have you in and out the door in less than 10 minutes,” she says.
Not sure where to start? Some of the more popular shakes are the Blonde Monkey and Strawberry Cheesecake. Fan favorite energy drinks include the Blue Water Sunrise, Peach Proteni and the weekly special.
Whatever shake or energy drink you choose, Wilson says it is going to be great.
“People can expect a happy and uplifting environment when visiting Surfs Up Nutrition,” she says. “Every person that walks through the door is appreciated, and I want to make sure they feel that way.”
The knowledgeable staff will walk you through the extensive menu including several enhancers to suit your mood du jour.
Customers and clients of the popular smoothie spot are invited to take wellness goals to the next level with a free, four-week fit camp hosted right in the parking lot. Classes are at 5:30 pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and wrap up with a group celebration.
“It’s one of my favorite things we do here at Surf Up,” Wilson says.
Looking ahead, the couple hopes to make a positive impact on the community they now call home and any other places Surfs Up might expand.
“I want to create a happy and healthy environment that people want to come to because it makes them feel good,” she says.
