YWCA Lower Cape Fear’s Grandparent Support Network is expanding to Pender County with its first virtual support group on Thursday, January 21.

The Grandparent Support Network is a peer support group for grandparents who are providing full-time care for their grandchildren.

Virtual support groups give grandparents and their grandchildren access to case management, resource connections and on-going assistance to create a continuum of care for these children and families from birth to college graduation.

“With COVID-19 and a funding delay, we were unsure how to continue to bring services to our surrounding communities,” says Jhaniqua Palmer, YWCA’s Grandparent Support Network outreach coordinator. “However, the virtual world has opened up a different approach to bringing services. We are delighted to offer GSN-Pender County support services. Our hope with starting this new group is to provide support to grandparents and caregivers raising grandchildren by decreasing isolation among the caregivers in the community especially during this pandemic.”

Tammy Proctor, a member of The Pender Trailblazers, says her group is pleased that the YWCA Lower Cape Fear has come up with this innovative strategy to adapt the Grandparents Support Network programming for Pender County grandparents during these unusual times. The Pender Trailblazers is a group of dedicated community volunteer leaders who have come together to bring relevant YWCA programs to women and families across Pender County.

“We are pleased to be able to provide our grandparents with this remote program that can help them as they work with their grandchildren on an on-going basis,” Proctor says.
