Business Profile: Five-Star Bins

Five-Star Bins offers eco-friendly professional trash bin cleaning and power washing services across Pender and Onslow counties.

It’s time to toss the gunk and odor in your outdoor trash bins! The first-ever environmentally friendly professional trash bin cleaning service in Pender and Onslow counties, Five-Star Bins operates with a simple process that, true to name, promises five-star sanitation services and no more unwanted odors.

Local veteran Ishman Davis launched the idea in 2021 after he deep-cleaned his own bins to solve a fly problem around his home.
“I just stumbled across making a business out of this,” Davis says.

But when he received military orders to go to Japan shortly after, he paused the burgeoning concept.

A brown trash bin is tipped by a yellow mechanical arm, emptying contents into a blue cleaning machine labeled "VETERAN OWNED" with social media icons and visible steam or mist rising from the process.

In 2024 after being stationed back in his home state, Five-Star Bins officially took off. Davis, who also serves as a combat instructor in Jacksonville, has grown the business organically since then, mostly thanks to word-of-mouth referrals and his grassroots approach of tagging bins with postcards to introduce neighbors to the service.

Davis is often the one doing the hands-on work, though he occasionally brings in helpers for bigger jobs. For his clientele, the touchless service model makes things easy: Customers can leave their bins out by the driveway the day after trash pickup. Then Davis will drop by to clean, disinfect and return the clean bins to their place. The customer does not need to be home.

While there are other trash bin cleaning services around town, Five-Star Bins stands out for its earth-friendly approach. Davis uses hot water and pressure to clean, rather than harsh chemicals or bleach, finishing with an eco-friendly disinfectant.

Equally important is how the wastewater is handled.

“When washing dirty trash cans, there’s lots of nasty stuff in there,” Davis says, noting things like grease, food residue and bacteria. “We want to keep the dirty water out of the storm drains, neighborhood walkways and roads.”

A logo with a cartoon recycling bin saluting and holding a rifle, surrounded by stars and the words "FIVE-STAR BINS," is set against a waving American flag backdrop with smoke and sparks.

Davis collects the dirty water in his trailer and partners with a local car wash to dispose of it properly and sustainably.

Looking ahead, Davis’ main aim is to boost and maintain his clientele.

“I want to keep prices accessible,” he says. “I’m not in this to get rich, but it interests me, provides an outlet outside of my day job and helps the community.”
