Daily Grind Surf City and unWINEd are adult and kid-friendly places offering diverse experiences for tourists and locals alike.

If you are looking for an adult and kid-friendly place to hang out in Surf City, here’s a fantastic place for both. Daily Grind Surf City and unWINEd are under the same roof yet offer completely diverse experiences.

After moving here from Ohio in 2009, owners Jeremy and Tracey Shugarts first focused on getting their six children settled into the local school system. Shortly after, in May, 2010, they opened The Daily Grind Coffee Shop. In 2012 they opened the Daily Dip Ice Cream shop with 48 flavors of North Carolina-made ice cream. In 2015 they combined the coffee shop and ice cream shop into one operation.

In November of 2019 the Shugarts moved The Daily Grind to its current location on N. Topsail Drive. The Daily Grind now offers much more than coffee and ice cream.

Customers can choose from hot and iced lattes, frappuccino, healthy smoothies, breakfast sandwiches, doughnuts, Italian ice, pastries, milkshakes, sundaes, banana splits, cakes, muffins and much more and enjoy their selections in the spacious dining area at a table or on one of the comfy couches or chairs, relaxing in the air conditioning and grooving to the upbeat music.

The shop also sells t-shirts, novelties, gifts, local artwork and collectibles, so you actually grab a super-comfortable Tommy Bahama beach chair or gifts for the people back home while you stock up on bags of coffee from one of their eight blends.

Having traveled the world for years, the Shugarts had always looked for local places where they could go and enjoy themselves and listen to live music.

With this thought in mind, in May of 2020, they opened unWINEd Wine Bar, Beer and Charcuterie.

Along with an inside bar, this venue has a spacious deck that seats 80. On a corner stage, they offer live music seven days a week and two acts on Saturday and Sunday (the schedule of performances is posted on Facebook @unWINEdatthegrind). It’s a real treat to listen local musicians as well as some regional acts on the outdoor patio while enjoying a nice beverage and tasty fare. unWINEd offers 40 wines and 30 beers, with some on draft, and full meals as well as snacks. The menu includes a variety of appetizers, charcuterie plates, paninis and a variety of pizzas. If a beer or wine is not your style, then you can grab an ice cream or coffee and enjoy the music.

Being involved in the community is very important to Jeremy and Tracey.

Whether it is supplying the community with coffee and hot cocoa at the annual Christmas Tree lighting or sponsoring the Surf City Youth Leagues, they love being part of the Topsail community. They hope to see you soon — they have a seat saved for you, inside or out!

Living in the Hickory, North Carolina, area since I was a kid, my parents brought us to the North Carolina coast every summer — usually to the Outer Banks — so the salt life has always been part of me. When my daughter graduated from high school and started college in Raleigh, I immediately began to realize it was the perfect opportunity for me to go coastal. This area fits perfectly with my many hobbies, which include fishing, tennis, pickleball and golf. It’s difficult to describe to others how amazing the lifestyle is in southeastern North Carolina until you experience it for yourself! I have already met a plethora of amazing people in my sales and marketing position at Carolina Marketing Company, and I can’t wait to meet you!
